Idaho controlled hunts — real draw odds

Idaho doesn't use points — controlled hunts are a pure random draw. So the number that matters is your nonresident odds, pulled live from Idaho Fish & Game's Hunt Planner API.

nrOddsPct = nonresident first-choice draw odds. Idaho controlled hunts are a pure random draw — no points — so odds (applicants vs permits), not points-to-draw, are the real signal.

How Idaho works

No points — pure random draw

Idaho uses NO points at all. Every controlled-hunt application gets a random number — a first-year applicant has exactly the same odds as a 20-year veteran. And many deer/elk tags are general-season, sold over the counter to nonresidents with no draw at all.

How the draw works

Nothing to accrue — IDFG assigns each application a random number and draws from the entire eligible pool. Odds reset to pure chance every year.

idfg.idaho.gov · verified 2026
The catch

Nonresidents are capped at 10% of the tags in each controlled hunt — and just 1 tag in any hunt with 10 or fewer.

idfg.idaho.gov · verified 2026
Good to know

First choices are drawn first; second choices only fill what's left. A group with any nonresident draws at nonresident odds.

Good to know

Because there are no points, the no-wait path is huge here: general-season nonresident deer & elk tags are sold first-come until the quota fills.

On your radar

What needs your attention now

We track the deadlines and the leftover cycle so you don't have to.

🗓️
Idaho is no-points — pure random

A zero-point nonresident draws at the same odds as a 20-year veteran. Controlled-hunt deer/elk apps closed in spring; the leftover list posts after the draw (mostly TBD now).

🎟️
General-season NR tags — first-come

Idaho sells capped-quota nonresident general deer & elk tags first-come, no draw — the fastest way in. Returned tags route through Returned Tag Sales.

In-app for now; email/push on the roadmap. Exact OTC sale + returned-tag dates pending a mine of IDFG's tag pages — no unverified dates shown.

The answer

Best Idaho elk hunts to draw

Idaho is a pure random draw — no points, so a zero-point nonresident has the same odds as anyone. Ranked by NR draw odds × public-land access. (No per-unit success or herd data yet, unlike Colorado.) Idaho also sells general-season NR deer/elk tags first-come — the no-draw fast path.

Draw odds here are real (IDFG 2025), pulled from the Hunt Planner API — the ingest engine's first API adapter. Huntable-land % is real too: each IDFG Game Management Unit boundary intersected with USGS PAD-US huntable public land (national forest, BLM, state game lands & state forest) in an equal-area projection (shown where the hunt maps to a single GMU). Harvest success and maps elsewhere remain illustrative.
